Malahide Castle and Gardens, Dublin, Ireland

When the owners of Malahide Castle and Gardens discussed plans for its new Visitor Centre, it wanted to make sure that visitors left feeling as if this historic building’s history had come to life.

The 12th Century castle set in 260 acres on Dublin’s north coast and with magnificent walled gardens is one of the oldest castles in the country and has been home to the Talbot family for over 800 years.

Today’s Talbots wanted the new ground floor visitor area to feature an interactive exhibition that would not only tell the story of the Castle’s history, but fit sympathetically with the ancient aesthetics of the building.

Atlas AV was tasked with creating a bespoke audio visual experience and provided a solution that includes two large LED screens and advanced digital signage. A key feature is a seamlessly synchronised media wall with three 46” screens as well as an auditorium with high end projection and a screen for use in high ambience light conditions.

Further high end technology includes network controlled HD media players and web based interactive solutions, audio players and light shows.

With Malahide famous for no less than five ghosts said to haunt the castle, Atlas AV’s brief included recreating the ghostly apparitions for the visitor. Using pir and motion sensing technology audio and projection technology, the effect is positively spine tingling.

Bringing the past to life in a Grade 1 listed building required high quality engineering skills to meet project objectives whilst conforming to building preservation requirements.

The new Visitor Centre succeeds in telling the story of this fine Irish stronghold through an interesting, creative and reliable interactive solution.
